Organelle Size Regulation: Length Matters

چکیده

The control of flagellar length can be easily studied in the model genetic cell Chlamydomonas. Recent work has revealed that the mutant gene in a long-flagella mutant encodes a protein kinase.

Mitotic chromosome length scales in response to both cell and nuclear size

Multicellular development requires that cells reduce in size as a result of consecutive cell divisions without increase in embryo volume. To maintain cellular integrity, organelle size adapts to cell size throughout development. During mitosis, the longest chromosome arm must be shorter than half of the mitotic spindle for proper chromosome segregation. Using high-resolution time-lapse microsco...

Organelle Size Equalization by a Constitutive Process

How cells control organelle size is an elusive problem. Two predominant models for size control can be distinguished: (1) induced control, where organelle genesis, maintenance, and disassembly are three separate programs that are activated in response to size change, and (2) constitutive control, where stable size results from the balance between continuous organelle assembly and disassembly. T...

Hierarchical Size Scaling during Multicellular Growth and Development.

Multicellular organisms must regulate their growth across the diverse length scales of biological organization, but how this growth is controlled from organelle to body, while coordinating interdependent functions at each scale, remains poorly understood. We utilized the C. elegans worm intestine as a model system to identify distinct allometric scaling laws, revealing that the growth of indivi...

Intraflagellar transport balances continuous turnover of outer doublet microtubules: implications for flagellar length control

central question in cell biology is how cells determine the size of their organelles. Flagellar length control is a convenient system for studying organelle size regulation. Mechanistic models proposed for flagellar length regulation have been constrained by the assumption that flagella are static structures once they are assembled. However, recent work has shown that flagella are dynamic and a...

A Novel MAP Kinase Regulates Flagellar Length in Chlamydomonas

Little is known about the molecular basis of organelle size control in eukaryotes. Cells of the biflagellate alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii actively maintain their flagella at a precise length. Chlamydomonas mutants that lose control of flagellar length have been isolated and used to demonstrate that a dynamic process keeps flagella at an appropriate length. To date, none of the proteins requir...
